Te Tumu Whakaata Taonga New Zealand Film Commission: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Survey 2024
What is the purpose of this survey?
As part of He Ara Whakaurunga Kanorau | Diversity and Inclusion Strategy, Te Tumu Whakaata Taonga New Zealand Film Commission (NZFC) have made a commitment to undertake a biennial survey on matters of diversity, equity and inclusion in the Aotearoa screen sector. This commitment contributes to our outcome ‘We understand the makeup of our industry and see progress in diversity and inclusion.’
The purpose of this survey is to understand the lived experiences of screen practitioners and provide insight into how the sector can collectively improve equity and inclusion. The survey has a strong focus on qualitative data, with the aim of getting a snapshot of people’s experiences to monitor progress and to identify key issues.
In 2019, the NZFC conducted a Gender, Diversity and Inclusion survey. This provided valuable information that helped develop He Ara Whakaurunga Kanorau and provided a benchmark for future research. This survey builds on this existing mahi, and many of the questions asked will be repeated so we can track progress.
Who is this survey open to?
This survey is open to all people who work in the Aotearoa film and screen industry. No matter your background, identity, community, role or experience in the industry – we want to hear from you.
What will happen with the results of the survey?
This survey will be run by an independent research company, Verian. All data collected in this survey will be anatomised and Verian will ensure your survey answers remain confidential when reporting the results. Data and insights from the survey will be used to inform and support several of the initiatives in He Ara Whakaurunga Kanorau and inform discussions held internally and with our key stakeholders.
Aggregated results may be published in a report on the NZFC website. All responses are 100% anonymous and all responses will be aggregated. Identifying information will not be published.
What types of questions will I be asked?
Some questions in this survey will ask about any barriers and experiences you have had in the screen industry. These questions may bring up experiences of discrimination, harassment and bullying. We encourage you to prioritise your safety and wellbeing while answering these questions – please feel free to skip these questions if you wish. A list of national help and support lines can be found here.
Some questions will ask about demographic information. We understand the sensitivity of this information so all questions will have the option ‘prefer not to answer.’ Demographic data will always be anonymised and aggregated.
